Bruce is a 5th generation Australian whose ancestors emigrated from Pomerania within a troubledEurope.  Born in south-easternQueensland, he spent his formative years around the northern perimeter ofAustralia – Thursday Island,Gladstone,Brisbane andDarwin.  His first decade of working life was as an exploration geologist, research scientist with the federal government and marine geologist with a UN technical secretariat in the South Pacific.  These offered total immersion into the worlds of the Kimberleys, Channel Country, Simpson Desert, Arnhem Land, Great Barrier Reef, the South Pacific islands,New Guinea, the close islands of the Indian Ocean, and northernAmerica.

In 1983 he turned to the formal study of sculpture at the Canberra School of Art under Ron Robertson-Swann and has since worked between the contrasts of making sculpture and investigating geological issues.  His first eight years of studio practice were in the ACT, but he subsequently built and established his studio in the Braidwood district of theSouthern Highlands.  For almost 20 years he taught lost wax casting at theANUSchoolof Art.

He is driven by a fascination in allowing the unconscious to manifest expression through the process of making sculpture.  Potentialities of the work may point back to a preconscious and prehistoric world of instinct or to the future.  Carl Jung proposed that the unconscious does not differentiate between symbolism and reality.  As such, manifestations of the unconscious as sculpture can potentially offer a fecund and illuminating visual experience.

Bruce has exhibited widely within Australia, and in Denmark, Chinaand Malaysia. He was an invited artist-in-residence in Kuala Lumpurand Kuching, Malaysiain 1988 and at taught at Lasalle-SIA, Singaporein 1997.  His works are held in private collections in Australia, North America, Europe and Southeast Asia. He has participated in Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi from 2003-2009, at Cottesloe 2006-2010, and inAarhus in 2009, 2011.
